Local glass art is what Smokes On State is all about! In the very beginning stages of the store, we had a choice to make….supply import glass or supply local art. We chose the ethical route and decided to supply the area with local glass art to keep the support the local artists who have families to support. This was a great decision as we have made connections with some of the best in the industry and some of them live right in the immediate Madison, WI area. We currently display over 70 USA artists with many of them coming directly from the immediate Madison, WI area and we are extremely proud of that.
What sets local, American glass art apart from import glass is the quality and craftsmanship. With import glass, it is made cheap in order to sell faster. However, the quality of import glass is very poor and has a tendency to break much easier. American glass on the other hand is properly annealed, which is the process by which the temperature of the kiln is brought down in a controlled, even manner. Import glass is not annealed properly, so when the clay oven burns out, that is what is considered annealed. Import has tried to make up for this issue by making their glass thicker, which doesn’t do anything because the fractures inside the glass are invisible from the formation of the piece and that’s where they crack when damaged. If the piece is not annealed properly, this is the piece’s inevitable outcome. You will surely end up spending more money supporting local glass art, but you will also be in better hands by purchasing a piece that is much less likely to break. You can buy 10 pieces at $10 and have them keep breaking or you can buy 1 piece for $100 and have it last you much longer!!
Not only is the quality much better, the fact that we know we are supporting families right here in the USA is very satisfying. When you buy import glass, you are sending money outside the US and you are also supporting labor conditions that are very unacceptable. When you buy American-made glass art, you not only support the families involved, but you also keep the money in the area, especially when you buy “local” local. This is a full-circle industry and when you support the local economy, you keep that money in the immediate area. The craftsmanship and quality that American artists present are unsurpassed.
The artists that are displayed at Smokes On State are all individuals that we know personally. We display each and every artist in the store by putting their name and where they are make their beautiful art so the customer knows exactly what they are buying and what they are supporting. This has made a big difference in how the customer ultimately makes their decision, because they feel more comfortable in knowing what they are supporting.
WE SUPPORT LOCAL GLASS ART!!!
